When I went home before Thanksgiving I brought my yeti (reusable water bottle) that I use so that I don't have to use plastic ones. When I was packing to come back to SD I couldn't find it anywhere!! :( So recently, I've had to use more plastic water bottles. The point to all of these random facts is that I realize that I've recently been embarrassed to use a plastic water bottle! I don't even want to pull it out of my back pack. I don't really understand where this comes from but I think it's because I know now that it's not necessarily good for the environment and I also surround myself with people who feel the same way. Anyways- can't wait to go home and get it again! In the meantime if anyone has any advice of what I can do for the next few weeks for water that doesn't involve buying a new one it'd be appreciated :)

The documentary about food that I watched was called 'A Place at the Table' and it addressed the issue of hunger in America. It's easy to think that hunger only exists in other countries with less money, or it' s only the homeless in America suffer but it's a much bigger problem that effects families as well. The term 'food insecurity' is defined as not knowing where your next meal/ the funds for your next meal are coming from. The movie also talked about 'food deserts' in America; places where fresh produce is difficult to attain. The next night I had friends over to make dinner and we ended up talking about this issue for a long time over dinner!

SouthEast San Diego is officially a food desert. Lots of liquor stores with a few old veggies, but relatively few grocery stores. A cool organization that I have interacted with in years past is the Peoples Produce Project, based in Encanto (SW SD).  Check them out at https://www.facebook.com/pppsesd

Saturday the 16th was national beach clean up day ! It was so awesome being a part of it in my local community of OB and seeing all the people that came together all over town and the rest of San Diego to clean up our loved beaches. It fit really well timing wise with the video that I watched called 'A Plastic Ocean'. The main trash items found on the beach were broken up pieces of plastic and cigarette butts. I did notice a huge difference in the amount of trash on my beach here (OB) versus my home beach in NJ. There seems to be a lot more respect for the beaches here because there is a lot less trash so I hope to bring a greater awareness back to NJ when I go home.

I'm excited that you participated in this beach cleanup, Brittany! In general, I think Californians are a bit better than average re: waste on the beaches. However, if you watch the sides of the roads as you merge onto our freeways, there I see a LOT of paper and plastic trash. And of course during our rare rainstorms, much of this trash ends up in our local ocean and beaches.

Until recently, I've never composted my food waste! I knew what it meant and I had a few friends who did it but it wasn't until I lived with Allegra that I began integrating it into my own daily life. Now that I realize how simple it is and how minimal effort is required I can't imagine myself going back. Just today I composted the peel from my banana, an apple core, and mango skin! A challenge with this is finding someone who will take the compost but we've been directed to a local garden that will take it which is awesome because it'll go right back into our own community.

I really like how you took initiative to compost although it is not necessarily the most glamorous or fun sustainable activity. At home, my family makes an effort to be mindful and compost our waste, however being at school, I tend to not think about my waste as much since it is so easy to go along with everyone else and through away my waste on campus.
